LEADS is a new European integrated project funded in part by the European Commission under the FP7. It groups together 3 universities and 4 companies with the common goal of building and showcasing a novel Cloud service model named Data-as-a-Service, atop an innovative infrastructure based on an elastic collection of geographically distributed micro-clouds. LEADS will answer the demand of companies wishing to exploit the wealth of public data available on today's Internet but who do not have the will or capacity to perform data extraction, storage and processing in house. By proposing a novel Data-as-a-Service model, LEADS will allow to such companies to perform these operations, by lowering costs through sharing, easing the integration of privacy-protecting querying on public and private data including data updated in real-time, and more. LEADS also considers future infrastructures for cloud computing and dematerialized IT. Instead of maintaining data in-house in dedicated data centers, it is both economically and ecologically better to store it in a shared infrastructure. The project considers an elastic collection of micro-clouds as the target architecture. Such micro-clouds, typically composed of a dozen of machines, can be geographically distributed and deployed close to data sources and accesses. Research in the LEADS project will also gear towards providing privacy, security, energy-efficiency, availability, elastic scalability, and performance to such infrastructures.
